Technology Integration Coach
Emily has had more than ten years of experience teaching and leading in education, with a special focus on start-up and turn-around organizations. As a result, Emily has unique insight into developing systems that support teachers, maximize learning time, and lead to organizational sustainability and scalability. She began her career teaching 5th grade as a 2007 Teach for America corps member in Washington, DC, and then returned to Chicago to teach middle school language arts and serve as an instructional coach and assistant principal at Acero Cisneros charter school. Pursuing her passion for digital learning, Emily joined eSpark Learning as the Director of Learning Design where she built personalized, standards-based learning plans for PreK-8th grade students and led tech integration workshops around the country.
In an effort to combine all the best pieces of high quality schools with a non-traditional approach, Emily joined a team of 3 other women to found Foundations College Prep, an independent, 6th-12th charter school on Chicago’s far south side. FCP was 1 of 4 charter schools to receive authorization in 2013, and was awarded a $450,000 Next Generation Learning Challenge Grant from the Gates Foundation. In her role as Dean of School Culture & Assistant Principal, Emily helped shape the fundamental building blocks of FCP, including an individualized, student-centered approach to academics and culture, a digital platform for project-based and personalized learning, and a restorative justice initiative that infused peace and mindfulness into the school community. In its first year, FCP’s high school, serving a population of 94% low-income and 34% special needs students, was rated a Level 1 school. Emily’s work is always rooted in her beliefs that relationships with families are key, students need the highest of expectations paired with unwavering kindness and patience, and demographics certainly do not determine destiny.
